The Hamades, the family behind Bennies, are a true American success story. Originally from Lebanon, Bennie Hamade’s parents moved to the United States to seek a better life when war tore through their home country. They started a restaurant in New York City, convinced Bennie and his brothers to join them, and by the 1980s, Bennie and his siblings had built a successful chain of Mediterranean restaurants in Manhattan, drawing rave reviews from some of the most influential food critics in the country.
Since that time, many of the family members have retired or left to pursue other opportunities, and Bennie’s restaurant in Englewood is the last remaining outpost of the former empire. It’s a local favorite and still has a reputation for being one of the best Lebanese restaurants near The Brownstones at Englewood South — and in the tri-state area! Regulars especially praise the hummus and tabbouleh appetizers, as well as the selection of roasted kebabs.
